There are plenty of dangerous figures in the magical pirate world of One Piece. On top of being skilled deadly sailors and scavengers, some of the most powerful pirates have been able to harness the powers of the Devil Fruits to gain extraordinary advantages, but there’s only one character who has been able to claim that kind of power twice, Blackbeard.
Take a look back at the history of this One Piece villain, how he became so powerful and why that doesn’t bode well for the world at large.
WHO IS BLACKBEARD?
Marshall D. Teach is originally an unremarkable orphan who ended up joining the Pirate Emperor Whitebeard’s crew when he was twelve. Teach wants to travel the world and seek out one of the Devil Fruits, specifically the Yami Yami no Mi (or Dark-Dark Fruit). While serving under Whitebeard’s lieutenant, Thatch, the crew finds the magical item. Seeing his chance, Teach betrays and murders Thatch, taking the fruit and power for himself. Afterwards, Teach begins his own pirate crew, naming himself Blackbeard.
He travels the ocean, encountering a young Monkey D. Luffy and encouraging him to fight for his dreams. He is eventually attacked by Ace (Luffy’s adopted brother), who also served under Thatch and saw him as a mentor. Ace wants revenge against his former ally, escalating the conflict when Blackbeard reveals his intention to attack and bring in Luffy for the bounty on his head. The destructive battle between the pair ends with Blackbeard escaping while Ace is captured by authorities.
Blackbeard is among the pirates recruited to form an alliance against Whitebeard, using the battle as a chance to increase the deadliness of his crew by adding more dangerous members. He confronts Whitebeard alongside his crew and kills his old captain, taking his powers and becoming one of the Pirate Emperors. After the time-skip, he is shown as even more powerful and fearsome.
WHAT CAN BLACKBEARD DO?
Blackbeard is unique in the One Piece universe. Throughout the world, individuals who work hard enough to claim a Devil Fruit get a chance to eat one. Consuming a Devil Fruit grants the the person supernatural powers and abilities. Blackbeard originally eats the Dark-Dark Fruit, a Devil Fruit that bestows the ability to create darkness out of nothing.
Considered a naturally evil technique, the darkness has a crushing gravitational pull, ripping apart the surroundings and absorbing – or even redirecting – some attacks. The power also negates the Devil Fruit powers of other characters if Blackbeard has physical contact with them, meaning they lose any defensive attributes and must fight the massive brawler in close quarters. He can even use the gravitational pull of his dark powers to draw enemies closer so he can have an opening.
After killing Whitebeard, Blackbeard claims the powers his former captain gained from the Gura Gura no Mi – otherwise known as the Quake-Quake Fruit. Considered one of the most powerful Devil Fruits, this gives Blackbeard the power to create shock waves upon command. He can use this in minor attacks, such as amplifying his punches with that additional power, or he cause this in major attacks, such as causing earthquakes and tsunamis. This means Blackbeard is the only person to wield the powers of two fruits at the same time. It’s been hinted that he’s not fully human, which could account for this advantage.
WHY IS BLACKBEARD SO DANGEROUS?
Blackbeard is a long-running antagonist for One Piece, serving as a recurring foil for Luffy and his allies over the years. He is the former heated enemy of Luffy’s adopted brother Ace, and he played a major role in his capture by the Marines, which led to Ace’s death. This enrages Luffy as he comes to realize that Blackbeard is the man who motivated him earlier in life.
Blackbeard is a deadly fighter, who was more than capable before he claimed a second Devil Fruit. He’s also a reckless and destructive figure, casually causing massive environmental crises as a result of his training with the Quake-Quake Fruit powers. His rising stature in the world is also cause for alarm, as his crew has become one of the most dangerous assortments of killers on the seas. While other Pirate Emperors are threatening and dangerous in their own ways, the chaotic nature of Blackbeard means he is one of the biggest threats in the One Piece universe.
